Chuck Cawthon is Georgia Critic’s Choice “Trainer of the Year”!

For the SECOND YEAR IN A ROW CMA’s Head Trainer and founder of Contemporary Martial Arts, Chuck Cawthon, has received Critic’s Choice “Trainer of the Year”!  (Last year, Chuck received the People’s Choice AND Critic’s Choice “Trainer of the Year)

“Those awards mean much more than just the words printed on them. They represent the professional relationship between trainer and pupil, the hard work of EVERY student from 4 yrs old to adult, the great atmosphere inside Contemporary Martial Arts and much, much more.

First and foremost, I’d like to thank my wife and best friend Carolina Cawthon.  She is without a doubt the best friend I have ever had.  Without her, I would have never had the confidence to do what I do.  She continues to support me and consistently pushes me to be the best person, husband, PawPaw, and trainer that I could possibly be.  Thank you Carolina!!

Thank you to all trainers/critics who voted for me again this year! I felt like a “fanboy” on stage with all the other recipients who have been doing this game much longer than me and also feel that there were some much more deserving. I’m humbled and honored to receive this award for the second year in a row. Thanks to all of my students because without great students, there could be no great trainer. Thank you to David Oblas, Jose Santiago and everyone else involved for having such an event for coaches, fighters and gyms to get recognized. Also thanks to MY trainers: David “Chip” Prather, Adam Singer, Rory Singer and my judo coach Zach Hill.”

Established in 1996

Chuck and Carolina opened Contemporary Martial Arts, Inc. in 1996.  Along with Carolina’s 2 children, Dave Martin and Tanya Martin(now Mrs. Tanya Hudson!), Chuck and Carolina laid down the foundation for what is now considered one of the best, most complete martial arts’ curriculum for kids/adults in the southeast.  Competing in sport karate, grappling and full contact kickboxing tournaments, CMA was raising eyebrows from their very first tournament!

Lil Dragons are the FUTURE!

CMA’s Lil Dragon program is designed to teach and reinforce positive behaviors through easy to learn fun activities that focus on self control, coordination, and building self esteem, as well as many other important ideals and traits. There is a noticeable improvement in our Lil Dragons’ listening and focusing skills, as well as their self control, as they progress through our program. Our instructors work closely with our Lil Dragons and their parents to address any concerns or behavior problems that our students may be exhibiting. We can accomplish this by providing a safe, positive environment where our Lil Dragons can learn for themselves – what is the right thing to do and have a great time in the process.

Yet ANOTHER MMA Title Comes Home To CMA!

First of all, I’d like to thank everyone that came out to support me, C.J. Hamilton, Jay Gray and Brandon Webb.

Webb was first to fight and did NOT disappoint!   He landed an uppercut early in the first round to get the knockout and walked away knowing he didn’t have to get more hits in after his opponent was down and out. A professional gesture by a young amateur.  Upon winning this bout, Brandon became the NEW USFFC 145 lbs MMA Champion! Brandon now has TWO MMA titles in TWO different states in TWO different weight classes!  (GFC 155 lbs MMA Champion, and NOW the USFFC 145 lbs Champion!)

Jay did well in the first round, landing some right hands and managing to get up after each takedown. In the 2nd round, he backed out with his chin up and got clipped. He got his wits back while on the ground, but it was too late. His opponent had already secured a dominant position, and even though Jay escaped a RNC, the ref stopped it due to strikes after the escape. Good stoppage, and Jay is perfectly fine and healthy.

C.J. showed what happens when CMA striking is accompanied with his long and prestigious wrestling pedigree! Throwing fakes/feints of takedowns while standing, landing low kicks, securing a top dominant position while landing heavy shots, passing to the side , taking the back and securing a rear naked choke in the first round.

As always, thanks to Adam & Rory Singer & all of the training partners at The HardCore Gym, and all the training partners at CMA!!

CMA Hartwell and CMA Monroe Had Successful Belt Testings!

Wednesday, March 25th & Thursday, March 26th CMA 1st degree black belt Dave Martin and his wife Kim had their FIRST belt test of 2015 at their dojo in Monroe, Georgia!  From Pre K Lil Dragons & K-2nd Lil Dragons on March 25th to 3rd grade through 8th grade juniors on March 26th, CMA Monroe had a GREAT first time testing!  Congrats to all who passed, and a special CONGRATULATIONS to Mr. Chuck’s granddaughter Lilly for passing her 1st degree yellow belt test!

Saturday, March 28th CMA Hartwell hosted our first belt test inside our building since September of 2014.  Late 2014, our building was flooded and had over $25,000 worth of damage done to equipment/mats.  It took us weeks to repair, and we could not have rebuilt  and made it through that terrible time without the students, friends, family, strangers and our ENTIRE hometown of Hartwell coming to our rescue.  With the help of ALL mentioned, CMA was able to make a big enough down payment for top of the line mats safe enough for Pre K Lil Dragons and durable enough for our MMA Team.  It was a very humbling experience and one that we will ALWAYS be thankful for.

Congratulations to ALL who passed, and for those who fell short let’s get back at it and work harder for NEXT test month!
